INTRO: Luke 16:19-30 was read for us earlier. Let me just say that there are those who hold this is a story of an account that actually happened, and there are those who hold this is a parable. I do think this is a story of an account that happened, but my purpose does not have to do with that, but with verse 29 when Abraham said to the rich man, "They have Moses and the Prophets; let them hear them." I was pondering something one night, and I think it was because I was in the process of studying Calvinism. And in those studies, I read of those who pointed out the errors of Calvinism, but two of those who pointed out the errors of Calvinism taught another error, and that is that repentance is not necessary for salvation. And I thought, "Lord, how are Christians to keep from falling into some of these many errors afloat in the Church?" I think it was these concerns that brought these words of Scripture powerfully to my mind, "They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them." And it seemed to me as if the Lord was reminding me that in light of all the erroneous teaching in the Church today: "They have Moses and the prophets, let them hear them." And it dawned on me that not only do we have Moses and the prophets, but on top of that we have Jesus and the Apostles! We have the entire Word of God. That is how we are to keep from falling into error. My challenge for us this morning is to make every effort to be discerning Christians by knowing the Word of God for we have all of it so very abundantly!
