This first portion of 2 Corinthians opens with a mention of believers' affliction and God's comfort of us. Here and elsewhere in scripture it is made clear that both affliction and comfort have several purposes. Since suffering has God-devised purpose, it is not to be seen as something to be avoided at all cost. The result of these things can be, if we allow it to be, ministering to other believers, the salvation of others, and the strengthening of our faith!
