The Character of John the Baptist Vindicated
After Jesus had answered John the Baptist's doubting question, "are You the Coming One, or should we expect someone else?", He next turned to the crowds and spoke to them about the character of John's ministry. He showed to them what a great man John truly was, but spoke of the greater privileges we in the New Covenant enjoy. But in showing the greatness of John the forerunner of the Messiah, He shows us the far exceeding greatness of the Messiah Himself! If we accept that John is Elijah who was to come, we must logically conclude that Jesus is the Promised Messiah.
