On Sunday, you heard God's Word about unrighteous anger. You were convicted. You know you sometimes explode. On Monday, you arrive home from work to find your beloved concrete bird bath in pieces on the ground, and your kids' football beside it. Anger wells up inside you. You say to yourself: 'I've told these kids a thousand times, 'play football in the BACKYARD!'' Without a thought to what God says about anger, you storm into the house to find your kids in the kitchen. 'Did you kids break my bird bath?' 'Yeah, Dad, but it was an acci...' 'HOW CAN YOU BE SO STUPID! HOW MANY TIMES HAVE I TOLD YOU TO KEEP AWAY FROM THE EXPLETIVE BIRDBATH? I'M TAKING THE EXPLETIVE FOOTBALL!' 'But Dad...' 'THERE WILL BE NO MORE EXPLETIVE FOOTBALL GAMES IN THIS YARD THIS YEAR! NOW GO TO YOUR EXPLETIVE ROOMS!' Well, now you feel a little better (for about 15 seconds), but what have you taught your children? Dad seems to care more about STUFF than he does about us. The way to respond to anger is to BLOW UP. When we are angry, normal household items become EXPLETIVE ITEMS. Christianity doesn't affect real life. This is the same guy who was singing hymns yesterday. What happened here? Dad was a HEARER OF THE WORD, but not a DOER OF THE WORD. This passage, and this message attempts to explain how we can be BOTH. The stranglehold of sin has been broken for the Christian. Now his renewed will must join forces with the Holy Spirit in the battle for complete control of his life.
