The Church's cry that 'Jesus is Lord' is strongly contested in this world. We try to find our own origins, in prehistory or in space, write our own laws to accommodate our cravings and save ourselves with science. Paul contended with the contestants in the first century world, telling us that everything is created with the mighty Son of God in mind. He is creation's origin, purpose, goal and maintainer. In particular, he is its Saviour, rising from the dead to be Lord of the new creation God is raising up from the dust of the old. Here is where we falter most, thinking that we can deal with the death that is all around us, and in us. We try to live one step ahead of the coming disaster: 'A breakthrough a day keeps the crisis at bay'. Rather, we should confess that 'Jesus is Lord' and use our powers and potential to live in the security of his reign.
