God’s perfect standard drives us to the cross. In order for us to be rightly related to God, we have to come to the point where we say, ‘Lord I cannot do this on my own’. Jesus tells us to be perfect, the only way for us to do that is to start over, being born again. We are not saved by what we do, we are saved by Jesus. If we have never come to the point of hating our own sin, then we do not know Jesus. God’s standard is perfection, given this standard is not possible for us apart from Christ. Our best efforts at keeping the law still fall short. Sin ruins everything, there is nothing we can do to clean it up. Jesus did not come to be a rules enforcer, He came to deliver us from evil, not to give us more rules. Jesus declares that we can go to Hell because of our attitude towards people. God does not want us to pretend everything is okay with God while things are not okay with others. We have all sinned and fallen short of God’s glory. We are not to let any sin become more to us than our body parts. We have nothing in this life that matters more than God. Jesus does not just take away our sin, He provides our righteousness; we are rich in Him.
