Timothy, to whom Paul is writing, has been in ministry for some 17-18 years. In the face of ongoing persecution Paul is exhorting him to continue to be faithful, stand for the Truth and keep his passion for his ministry stoked.
Paul knows opposition to the Gospel ministry will not decrease and it can become wearisome. Paul gave him some timeless counsel to enable this faithful servant to carry on in his service to the Lord. These commands are detailed in what the formats of our bibles have as 1:8-2:13.
He begins with the responsibility to not be ashamed of the Gospel. For Timothy this means do not let yourself become ashamed as he has proven himself faithful up to the time Paul was writing. Paul knows he will need the encouragement and that past faithfulness does not guarantee future faithfulness.
He next told Timothy to join with him in suffering for the Gospel. The means (or power) for him to do so is from the same source, and of the same strength, as that by which he was saved, “the power of God for salvation” as Paul had described in Romans 1:16. This power will enable Timothy and all servants of the Lord to be faithful, fearless and fruitful in the ministry of the Gospel throughout the church age.
