God's test of Abraham begins with a summons to obey. God suddenly breaks into Abraham's life with a summons but Abraham does not know that God is testing him. Abraham responds with ready compliance - & so should we. God commands Abraham with words that pulse with pathos & remind us of God's first call to Abraham in Gn 12:1-3. Abraham is to go to a location yet to be disclosed & there offer Isaac as a burnt offering. How can this command square with the promises of God? with the character of God? We will certainly be tested: perhaps by the temptations which incite our remaining sin which require obedience of faith; perhaps in circumstances which require perseverance in faith. But here is a man being tested in his integrity, being commanded to relinquish what God had promised solely because he trusts in God who commands. It is a test of exquisite existential tension - a tension which only faith can overcome.
