Paul dealt with possible divisions in the early church stating repeatedly that there was one church formed by believers in Jesus Christ composed of Jewish believers and Gentile believers. The historical context of this second letter to the Corinthians was Paul's effort of gathering collections from the Gentile churches he had planted for the poor Jewish believers in Jerusalem. His underlying motive was to demonstrate a connection between the Gentile believers in various local churches with the poor Jewish believers in Jerusalem. This was not a broad brush effort to do fundraising for the poor in general but specific to the matters between Jews and Gentiles and their oneness in the church. All of Paul's comments about money are in the context of grace. The money given was provided by and a manifestation of God's grace. As Gentiles made a collection to the Jews it was a recognition of the truths in the Word of God as concerned Abraham and God's promises to the him and his descendants, the Jews.
