1 Tim. 3:2 says, "An overseer, then, must be above reproach, the husband of one wife, temperate, prudent, respectable, hospitable, able to teach." These are not suggestions. They are the qualifications for elders. An elder must be above reproach, even though many of the pastors you know are not. To be above reproach means that you cannot easily find fault with him. His life is well ordered and his conduct is stellar. Part of being above reproach is that he must be the husband of one wife. This rules out both polygamy and divorce and remarriage.
