The prophecy against Edom consists of four parts: 1) The Judgment Intended; 2) All Possible Refuge Removed; 3) The Cause of the Judgment; and 4) God's Vengeance Upon the Unrepentant Wicked.
Uses of this book:
1. It is lawful to pray that God would divert judgment because charity hopes all things, many of God's judgments have a swift end, and Samuel and Abraham both offer good examples to us. 2. We should rest in the decree of God, though his performance requires patience on our part. Thus Noah preached 120 years before God destroyed the unrepentant of his generation. 3. We should observe how our own sins are threatened. Patience, when abused, can turn to wrath. Be careful of refusing the medicine that would cure you.
It advances the message of God among men when all the ministers (trumpets) of God give a certain sound -- when they agree regarding true doctrine. Let us observe the settled doctrine and practice of the church in which we live. If some particular men or preachers go their own way, that is not the fault of the church, but the schism of private men.
We must distinguish between the rumors we hear from men and the rumor that comes from God. The word gives life by begetting faith. Faith today lays hold on general promises and threats. The drunkard may consider Noah & Lot; the presumptuous should regard the end of Nadab and Abihu. Satan labors most to undermine our faith.
