God sometimes uses one evil man or nation to punish another. Our minds can be settled in times of great upheaval. The consideration that God causes the wicked to be his sword prevents us marvelling in the day that God whets his sword. Since God uses the wicked to punish his enemies he sometimes gives them the bounty to do so.
Since God makes use of the evil on behalf of his church, we must not give the glory of God's justice to the means but to God himself. The wicked are not necessarily aware when they battle for the Lord. It need not be self-conscious, yet it is God who causes them to be valiant for him.
Though God makes use of the wicked to execute his will upon his enemies, yet we must be careful not to join with them in their wickedness and idolatry. [Click on the "Outside Web Link" to see the Order of Worship and other audio from the service in which this sermon was preached]
