As we continue our study of the gospel of John, we find ourselves about to leave the synagogue at Capernaum where Jesus just finished teaching the Jews about Himself; that He was the "bread of life," "the living bread that came down from heaven."
They were expecting Jesus to feed them again, as He did a few days ago on the eastern shore of the Sea of Galilee, and Jesus was explaining to them that they needed spiritual food because they would die if they ate only physical food.
However, if they ate the spiritual food He was offering, they would live eternally, but there were some who refused to believe Him. They listened to the hard sayings Jesus spoke, and, as they listened, they could not understand and they refused to believe because they took His words literally rather than metaphorically.
