The ministry of the Holy Spirit has been ongoing on the earth since creation. That ministry, after the ascension of Jesus Christ, took on a new dimension as He indwells believers.
Christ had spoken of the Spirit's coming as a Helper to believer's as a promise from God the Father. As Luke records the moments before Christ's ascension Jesus told His apostles that the fulfillment of the promise of His coming was to take place in a matter of days.
Jesus had explained to them that before the coming Kingdom would be restored to Israel He first had to suffer and die. At this time His apostles are still anticipating the fulfillment of that promise. They ask Jesus if the time for that is also within days as well. Jesus told them the time for the kingdom being established was in the Father's hand and only known to Him. What He did not say was that neither the nature of the coming kingdom nor the promise of its coming had been changed in any way. Later revelation would clarify and expand details of God's plan and promises relating to the kingdom, but could not and does not in any way change those promises.
With the ascension of Jesus Christ to heaven, His bodily and earthly ministry has been completed. Today He sits at the right hand of God the Father in heaven until the Father says it is time to return to earth to establish His kingdom. With the ascension of Jesus, the Holy Spirit will then come to earth to indwell and empower believers as witnesses of the Gospel of Christ. This indwelling ministry of the Holy Spirit carries believers to a new level of intimacy with God.
