The writer of Hebrews in 4:6-10 makes the argument that God has established His Sabbath not as just a day where we retire from our labors, but establishes an eternal rest and communion with God. If Sabbath was merely a earthly pursuit, then when Joshua delivered Israel into the promised land it would have been finished. However, as the writer says "God spoke of a day later on." That is, the day of rest will not be a mere calendar day but rather a state of existence that will never cease from peace, rest, and communion with God. Sabbath, is therefore not something to dread, not something to endure, but is something to delight in. This makes the first question and answer of the WSC even more poignant. "What is the chief end of man? To glorify God AND enjoy him forever."
