As Americans, and pretty much the rest of the world these days, we don't really understand what "sovereign" and "lord" entails. We are a country founded in rebellion and shirking off the tyranny of kings and lords. When we hear words like these we think of other words like "slave" and "serfdom".

So when the Bible repeatedly proclaims the need to make Jesus Lord of our lives in our justification it is no surprise when people deny that need and teach contrary to it. Yet, we are commanded by the Scriptures to not listen to what man teaches but what God teaches.

When Jesus reveals Himself to Thomas and Thomas finally understands who the real Jesus is; when Thomas puts together all the teachings that he has misunderstood during Jesus' three year ministry; when Thomas sees the pierced hands and feet and side of the crucified King we learn of our need from Thomas' cry - "My Lord and my God!" (John 20:28).

We can deny Jesus his Lordship, just as we could deny the king his right to rule in 1500 England. We can rebel and reject. We can declare and teach others the need to believe in Jesus' Lordship - but that would not change the truth. The very character of who Jesus truly is forces us to either reject Jesus fully or to proclaim with Thomas "My LORD and my God!"
