The wickedness that is addressed here, is the evil of greed. Greed is the driving, insatiable hunger for more. Many times greed motivates oppression, as wicked men seek to dominate the weak and strip them of their possessions, their dignity, and even their life. This is a self-focused spirit that views others as dispensable in the quest for more. Greed isn’t just about money, it’s about desire. Stealing, drunkenness, adultery, and every other sin, in some form is motivated by greed. The God of greed is pleasure, and this is why people who have given themselves over to greed are so selfish in their actions. Again, we must look to the power of the gospel of Christ to deliver us from this overwhelming evil. Only Christ can deliver us from the power and bondage of sin. If we would be wise, we had better live as if that last sentence is true.
