Since the beginning of Creation, and even before that, God's desire what to have a people set apart for His pleasure, and His purpose, and His glory.

Adam was made special and separate from the animals and was given a status that was set apart from all creation. When man gave into temptation and sinned, God desired for man to return to a holy state and had the plan of the cross to redeem and reset the status of His people. He called for this set apart status in calling Abraham out of idolatry. He set apart Moses and called His Remnant in Leviticus 20:26 to be holy because they were suppose to reflect God's nature as holy. He set apart David so that his kingly line would be set apart.

In the person of Jesus Christ, He set apart the perfect God/Man to carry out a set apart purpose which was to die the perfect death that would set apart a particular people, the Church. It is this people God still calls to. He calls His People out of the world to be set apart (1 Peter 1:16). As Christians, we are set apart to declare the glorious name and work of a holy and awesome God. A God that still calls people to return to a set apart relationship that God had with His chosen creation at the beginning.
