A Thought From the Word
“Therefore, brethren, we were comforted over you in all our affliction and distress by your faith: For now we live, if ye stand fast in the Lord. ” I Thessalonians 3:7,8
One may not typically think of someone like the great Apostle Paul as one in need of comfort, encouragement and strength. But, he was. He had deep concerns for the well-being of God's people. In this situation, Paul had heard a report from Timothy that the new believers in Thessalonica, in spite of opposition to their faith, were standing firm in Christ and His gospel. They had not abandoned the faith because of adversity, but were still pressing on. This cheered the heart of this man that had lovingly and faithfully minstered to them.
Why should you stand fast in the Lord, even through periods of adversity? Obviously, the first reason is love and faithfulness to the Lord. But, secondly and importantly, your faithful endurance for the glory of God is a means of encouragement and strength to fellow believers. Hearts are made to stand in awe of God's love and grace that He has put in your heart to lead you to be faithful. Young believers (and old) are instructed by your example of faith and love in action.
This doesn't mean you are superman or superwoman. We all are weak, and need the prayers and support of one another. But, as we continue to trust and serve the Lord through sunshine and clouds, our lives are testifying to God's sufficiency and faithfulness. Stand fast in the Lord!
