"Two things have I required of thee; deny me them not before I die: Remove far from me vanity and lies: give me neither poverty nor riches; feed me with food convenient for me: lest I be full and deny thee, and say, Who is the Lord? Or lest I be poor and steal, and take the name of my God in vain." Proverbs 30:7-9 (part 2)
Agur’s request was noble. History hasn’t recorded whether it was granted. Undoubtedly, you have made your own requests about your own desires for life. Only you know whether these desires are coming to fruition. Agur’s request is the same as yours: requests. But it is important to remember that fulfilled desire is not necessary to honoring God. While we are responsible for the decisions we make, many circumstances are beyond our control. You may not be able to bear children; the job may have been offered to a less worthy candidate. But you can still honor God. Though it would have been easier for Agur to honor God with a “normal” life, God’s grace would still have been sufficient and God’s glory would still have been a worthy goal if he found wealthy or poverty. Don’t live in the misery of “what if.” The “what if” didn’t happen for whatever reason. Live in the “now.” Right now, God has given you what He has given you, and you can bring glory to God just where you are.
