Every commodity has a value that rises and falls based on its desirability. Desire arises from the pursuit of happiness and peace. Ultimately, everyone desires happiness. Agur’s contention is that the most valuable commodity in life is truth, and that God exclusively is the voice of truth. Truth is essential; if the promise of insight is ultimately disproven, disappointment lies at the end of the pursuit. But if the insight is trustworthy, then the follower of that truth has an expected and reliable end. These are not just abstract thoughts. Every moment, there are innumerable voices and commodities vying for your attention; each is presented in a skillfully wrapped package. They offer insight regarding your marriage, your happiness, your needs, your problems. Yet, only one of them is trustworthy. Only God’s words are pure(proven true). The previous verse reminds us of the incomparable uniqueness of God. Today, you need to be reminded of who God is. Who else has ascended to heaven, wrapped the oceans like a garment? It is from this Being that we have access to pure, trustworthy words.
