“A man that flattereth his neighbor spreadeth a net for his feet.” Proverbs 29:5
As we have moved verse by verse through Proverbs, we have noticed that edifying communication is inextricably connected to wisdom. Wisdom in communication is dependent on discerning one motivating goal: What will edify? It is the desire to edify that will heighten our dependence on God for discernment and will shape the words that come from our mouths. Edification sometimes calls for reproof and sometimes calls for praise. Encouragement becomes flattery when the motivation is hidden selfish gain. But flattery becomes much needed encouragement when the motivation is pure. The pursuit of edification is only found in a close relationship with God. It is when we are in fellowship with Him, humbled by His goodness, aware of His glory, that we seek His glory above our own even in our conversations.
