Solomon doesn’t mince words here, does he? It’s as if Solomon recognized that if he used even the slightest bit of diplomacy, we would miss the whole point. And it’s true, isn’t it? No matter how many times we are reminded that our hearts are easily deceived, desperately wicked, and that our feelings are no source of wisdom, this represents our biggest struggle of faith and obedience. Every single area of sinful inclination is traced to a desire, a feeling. We feel what we feel, and what we feel always feels right. Sanctification is a battle, a battle to submit actions to God’s will. But it is also a battle to transform our desires. This is good news. Our flesh will always desire sin, but by God’s transforming grace, even our desires can be gradually turned to desire what God desires. But this transformation of desire will only occur when we follow God’s prescribed pathway. First, we must elevate God’s will over our feelings. In time, the feeling(desire to do God’s will) will come as well.
