As we have studied Proverbs, one of the most helpful and surprising nuggets of wisdom has been the associations of concepts that we do not readily make. In this passage, the association is strife and trust. The opportunity for strife is inevitable due to the human condition of sin. The root of strife is pride. The anecdote for strife is trust. In another proverb we are instructed to trust in the Lord with the whole heart, to not depend on our own judgment, with the result being that He will direct our path. This instruction is not just applicable to the “big” life decisions but to the every day, the irritations, the anxious moments, the frustrations. Trusting God is a moment by moment casting of our cares, our reputations, our protection in His sovereign, wise hands. If He is able to take care of the big problems as He has demonstrated at the cross, why would we think He can’t handle the small?
