A consistent message of Proverbs is that wisdom is found in thinking in view of the long term. Christ demonstrated this wisdom when “for the joy that was set before him endured the cross.” It was by considering the ultimate reward of the cross that Christ was strengthened to faithfully endure the short term suffering of the cross. In terms of our relationships with others, this long term view is the only thing that will promote wisdom. Whether the options are anger/kindness, reproof/flattery, or lust/mortification of the flesh, the short term reward is always the desire of the flesh because it avoids discomfort and offers immediate gratification. But Solomon’s point is that the right thing (kindness, reproof, mortification) always has a better, lasting reward. As with so many other things, this long term view requires faith, faith that embraces the pain of the moment in the belief that time will prove that the sacrifice carries a greater reward. It is important to remember that the reward may not be appreciation for the reproof. The faithful rebuke may even result in the loss of friendship. But the reward is greater than that. It is found instead in something far greater, the smile and favor of God.
