If there is any doubt as to how God views the sacredness of life, let this verse bring clarity. The individual guilty of causing death is under condemnation, and the instruction is to not deliver him. The sovereign grace of God can and has delivered and justified murderers, for which all the redeemed should give thanks. But, without question, God hates the violent taking of life. It is noxious to His senses because He is the giver and sustainer of life, and so in reality, the assault against life is an assault against God. Therefore, as a society, our view of murderers should not be to absolve but to prosecute, to stand with God in the condemnation of murder. A society given to justifying murder is a society that has forsaken the Giver of life. From an individual standpoint, our responsibility is to rally behind the innocent in whatever capacity is legal, ethical, and faithful to God’s word. It is also our responsibility to condemn the murderer and not to be taken by the wisdom of this age.
