The picture painted by this verse is one of senseless, chaotic devastation. I recently read an account of the short but fierce reign of Nero in ancient Rome. His only plan seemed to be to feed his insatiable thirst for power and egalomania. The devastation he wreaked was breathtaking. As we consider our own times, such thoughts can cause great fear. While our leaders don’t have the free reign Nero enjoyed, many of the decisions and laws currently being brought down seem senseless, oppressive, and out of control. Our thoughts toward the future can bring further fear and doubt. So, what can the righteous do? First, we can understand that the heart of the king is in the hand of the Lord. There is one ultimate governor over all, and He is God. So, we are enabled to avoid panic and paralyzing fear by placing our eyes upon Him. Secondly, we can focus on righteousness in our personal lives and area of influence. Righteousness exalts a nation. Thirdly, we can lift our leaders up in regular prayer. Prayer is an expression of faith in a God who is able.
