Good stewardship is a part of wise living. While being responsible, and diligently caring for what God has given you will never save your soul, it is a sign that the eyes of your soul have been opened. Caring for what God has blessed us with, is a display of humility and gratitude. While we should not worship material blessings, we should not despise them either.
