Distinctive Gospel Preaching

Acts 3:11-13

Preachers of religious Christendom today are taught to use all means to get and keep an audience, and to make the message as simple, palatable, and non-offensive as possible. The apostle Peter was not so taught of the LORD, nor ever preached to that end to gain or maintain an audience. The scripture says that when Peter saw it (the crowd in wonderment over the lame man, and then on John and him as if they were now to be revered, he asked them why they marveled at this (the man and his healing), and why they looked so earnestly on them (the preachers).

  1. Distinctive gospel preaching gives no glory to ourselves in any way for the work of God (as though by our own power (strength or ability), or holiness (the word ‘God fearing’ or reverence). The distinctive Gospel message gives no glory to self-righteousness, self-willing, or self-power, but to the LORD Jesus Christ alone. While the attention of the crowd was on the man, and themselves, Peter took less than a minute to turn their attention to the LORD Jesus Christ alone.
  2. The sum of distinctive Gospel preaching is in who God is, and how God is just to justify sinners, both set forth by Peter in v.13.
  3. Who God is: The God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob whom these gathered professed as their God (Exodus 3:6), was none other than He who had sent the LORD Jesus into the world to save sinners by the very one that they, by wicked hands had taken and crucified, Acts 2:23, and delivered up and denied, v. 13. Jehovah, the covenant God of the Old Testament is the One who came in the flesh to save that people He covenanted to save from eternity, and accomplish their salvation Himself. The name Jesus means literally means Jehovah saves. That’s why our LORD said to His disciples, ‘Ye believe in God, believe also (even) in me, John 14:3.
  4. How God accomplished the salvation of sinners by the death of His Son. God by the very act of crucifixion accomplished His will and the salvation of His people, and through it all ‘hath glorified’ His Son”. When He died, His elect legally died in Him, when He rose again, they rose in Him as their representative. When He was glorified by His ascension into glory, all those sinners for whom He died were glorified in Him, Romans 8:29-‘whom He justified, them He also glorified.’ The truth is that man’s unbelief is no obstacle to God’s salvation. All the while, men acting out their rebellious nature against God and His Son, yet, in delivering Him up to be crucified, they did nothing more or less than what God the Father ordained. The priests in their blindness, offered up the spotless Lamb of God, and thereby the sin debt of those sinners God the Father purposed to save were put away, and His justice being satisfied by His beloved Son, He once for all and forever declared every one of those sinners Christ represented to be JUST (justified) before Him. Peter, as one filled of the Spirit, did not hold back preaching the Christ and Savior who was hated by them, even as He is hated the same today. We too were of that number, by nature, children of wrath…but God. Ephesians 2:3.
