The last three devotions have focused on how to treat people who have a heavy heart. Today we are considering how to treat those with a hardened heart. An overarching theme that we find in the last several verses is that wisdom selflessly looks to bless difficult people, or people who are in difficult circumstances. This is likely a familiar passage, and many of us are familiar with it because Paul quotes most of it in Romans 12:20. When the opportunity presents itself, it is unwise to withhold good from an individual whom you harbor ill feelings toward. You will notice that the passage says nothing about waiting until you feel like you can serve you enemy without being a hypocrite. It simply says do good when you can. Again, wisdom does not live life or make decisions based on feelings and emotional states. Those who are wise, obey God regardless of how they feel. This doesn’t make you a hypocrite, it makes you obedient.
