“Withdraw thy foot from thy neighbor’s house; lest he be weary of thee, and so hate thee.” Proverbs 25:17
This verse provokes a humorous picture. Benjamin Franklin’s observation comes to mind: “Guests, like fish, begin to smell after three days.” Yet, while it is funny, we are also reminded of an important truth: God is practical. His wisdom provides common sense. What kind of person would overstay his welcome so long that his neighbors dread seeing him come? The answer: A proud person who has little self-awareness. Those without self-awareness give little thought to the feelings of others. This is pride. On the other hand, a person who is sincerely seeking to follow the Lord is a humble person. A humble person is self-aware. He is aware of both his own weaknesses and of the burdens and needs of others. Therefore, he is not so self-indulgent that he does not recognize cues of what is appropriate and what is not appropriate. Even something as practical as how long to stay at dinner is covered in the wisdom of God!
