“By long forbearing is a prince persuaded, and a soft tongue breaketh the bone.” Proverbs 25:15
Have you ever had a problem that you did not really want to be solved? The first and obvious answer to such a question is that the question itself is ridiculous. But our day to day experience often tells a different story. To illustrate, think of one person who makes your life difficult. Now, think of how you commonly deal with this person. The common response is to either return insult for insult openly or in private. Our warped sense of justice demands some sort of retribution. The need to get in the last word is almost physical. But, the reality is that we have a problem that we don’t really want to solve. God’s way of dealing with difficult people is patient endurance and grace in the midst of wrath. His promise is that the hard bone is eventually broken by the soft tongue. This is difficult, but we need to understand that God doesn’t just advise this. He modeled it. Jesus, when reviled, refused to revile or threaten in return. Instead, he committed himself to the care of the One who judges rightly. It is in casting our cares upon Him that we find His care is sufficient for us.
