"As an earring of gold, and an ornament of fine gold, so is a wise reprover upon an obedient ear." Proverb 25:12

Jewelry is meant to have a complimentary effect on an individual's appearance. The question is usually, "how do these earrings look on me?", or something to that effect. While the jewelry, in and of itself is attractive, it is not meant to have standalone beauty, but to enhance the beauty of the recipient. The comparison Solomon makes here is so helpful, if we will open our hearts and receive it. This verse is not about receiving reproof, but giving it. Every faithful Christian, will at some time or another, be in a position to give reproof. If we draw a few parallels from Solomon's comparison, we immediately see that reproof is for the purpose of enhancing, or building up the recipient, not tearing them down. Wise reproof doesn't try to overwhelm the individual who is on the receiving end, but gives correction in a way that puts the recipients good in view, not the reproof itself. It is easy to become impressed with our perceived wisdom, and value our words or thoughts over people, but wise reproof doesn't think that way. May we grow in wisdom and in love as we strive to live faithfully with one another.
