There are two extremely important points that we will consider. First, God has designed life to be a process. Secondly, accepting that life is a process is results in practical wisdom, relieves a lifetime of frustration, and prevents rash foolishness. To illustrate, consider sanctification, being remolded into the image of Jesus. There are only two instantaneous parts of sanctification – Holy Spirit regeneration and glorification. The rest, the long days and years of life, are a process, a grind. When one loses perspective that it is a process, despair results. But when one maintains the perspective of John Newton, “I am not what I ought to be, I am not what I hope to be in another world, but still I am not what I once used to be, and by the grace of God I am what I am,” then there is encouragement and vision to continue to press on. But it is not just sanctification that is a process. All of life is a process. Failure to accept this leads to unmanageable debt, foolish marriages, disgruntled pastors, and nearly every other frustration in life. There will be a time to build the house. But it’s not the first thing. The preparation, planning, and saving must come first.
