Pr 23:12 ¶ Apply thine heart unto instruction, and thine ears to the words of knowledge. Pr 23:13 Withhold not correction from the child: for if thou beatest him with the rod, he shall not die. Pr 23:14 Thou shalt beat him with the rod, and shalt deliver his soul from hell.
The Bible always says it best. Eli's sons were neglected from discipline,1 Samuel 3:13 For I have told him that I will judge his house for ever for the iniquity which he knoweth; because his sons made themselves vile, and he restrained them not. Eli's sons gave him much trouble because of a lack of correction. It's better to whip them before they can whip you. One famous evangelist said, " I was raised at the knee of a devoted mother and across the knee of a determined father." Ephesians 6:4 And, ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.
