What’s your typical response, when someone who has sinned against you, or made you their enemy, falls under calamitous circumstances? The natural reaction for most of us would be some sort of satisfaction. We might remind ourselves of how this individual had sinned against us in the past, and then take the opportunity to rejoice in the fact that they must be suffering as a result of God’s vengeance on our behalf. Now, I want to make clear, that this passage is not teaching that we should not rejoice in the fact that God is faithful to deliver and avenge His people. However, as we rejoice in His faithfulness, we must not allow that to spill over into reveling over an individual’s misery. Christ would speak to this very issue in Mt. 5:44 when He taught us to love our enemies. So, how do we love someone that we are naturally inclined to hate, and how do we keep from rejoicing at the downfall of one who is our enemy? First of all, we must realize the gospel teaches that the only reason we have been saved, is because God Himself, did not rejoice when we fell, nor did He let His heart be glad when we stumbled. But He sent His Son to save us, while we were still His enemies, that we might be reconciled to Him. We can have pity, because He had pity on us. While we will consider this more tomorrow, we must begin with the gospel.
