“Lay not wait, O wicked man, against the dwelling of the righteous; spoil not his resting place: For a just man falleth seven times, and riseth again: but the wicked shall fall into mischief.” Proverbs 24:15-16 (part 2)

While the immediate context concerns wicked designs towards the righteous, verse 16 contains a great encouragement for every situation of life. It is not always the forces of evil that causes our fall. Many times, we suffer self-inflicted wounds. Many times, we find ourselves on the ground, having fallen once again. The promise of verse 16 is also a call to action. If you have fallen, there is only one thing to do – Get up. In the physical realm, this principle is clear. The worst thing an injured person can do is to remain in bed. The best thing they can do is physical therapy. And physical therapy is always painful. Stretching the injured muscles is laborious and miserable. But it is absolutely necessary to recovering strength and regaining use. The same is true spiritually. Depression and despair paralyze the fallen. But the gospel provides hope. It is Christ’s faithfulness, not our own, that brings us to God. It is God’s righteousness, not our own, that justifies. Arming our minds with the truth of the gospel is the only path to recovering strength when we have fallen. Have you fallen? Then get up, confessing, repenting, and turning to God for mercy, strength, and instruction in the right path.
