Abner was a man faithful to King Saul. When Saul died in battle, Abner took the surviving son of Saul and made him King over Israel. Ishbosheth was not a warrior. He depended on the strength of Abner to maintain the kingdom.
The interesting thing to me in my reading today is that Abner knew God's will was for David to be king in Israel. Yet, he set Ishbosheth on the throne.
as the LORD hath sworn to David, even so I do to him; 2Sa 3:10 To translate the kingdom from the house of Saul, and to set up the throne of David over Israel and over Judah, from Dan even to Beersheba.
Do you ever make decisions which you know are contrary to God's will? The bible doesn't say here that Abner suffered for this decision. Although, we do know that his life was taken from him by evil men. Even though the bible doesn't mention that Abner suffered for walking contrary to God's will, I believe we all know that it is not a good thing.
I found it amazing this morning that Abner knowingly walked contrary to God's will. We know God's will is going to happen. Why walk contrary to it? Submit your will to God's will. It's the best path to take.
