âO the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are his judgments, and his ways past finding out!â Romans 11:33
Man-centered religion thinks it has the inexhaustible, incomprehensible God of all creation solved. A god that can be discovered is not God at all. That god is a figment of the imagination and does not exist. Man may devise guidelines of religious order; and lay out clever programs and forms and fit the god of his mind into it, and yet miss the true God altogether. Do you suppose that could be what is described by our Lord in Matthew 7:21-23, âNot every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.â What a poor soul misses by natural religion he can receive only by divine revelation. What he receives by revelation is an understanding of the nature of God, which is His spirituality, âGod is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truthâ (John 4:24). By missing this men never see more than âthe man upstairsâ, a god whom they control. Said an old theologian: âA nature belongs to every creature which is difficult to understand; and also to God which is most difficult of all.â What a statement! From that let me give you a question to ponder. How do men think they have the God of the Bible solved when they canât understand one another? Jobâs friend Zophar asked this question, âCanst thou by searching find out God? canst thou find out the Almighty unto perfection?â (Job 11:7). Paul said in I Corinthians 1:21, ââŚthe world by wisdom knew not GodâŚâ The incomprehensibleness of God is a fact, yet a fact that should not despair believers from searching after Him. Somewhat of Godâs nature may be apprehended by our minds, yet can never be fully understood. Though we can never fully comprehend God there is a source of apprehension and that source is Christ. âPhilip saith unto Him, Lord, shew us the Father, and it sufficeth (satisfy) us. Jesus saith unto him, Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known me, Philip? he that hath seen me hath seen the Father⌠(John 14:8-9). Paul also gives the source of âfinding outâ God in II Corinthians 4:6. Study theology, for theology is good, but study Christ because Christology is better.
