This is such an important nugget of wisdom. The truth of this principle cannot be overstated, yet how often is it neglected? Who do you go to for counsel when an important decision needs to be made? How many trusted individuals do you seek as you are trying to move forward in a major life decision. For many, the answer to this question would be one or none. It is easy to adopt the attitude that says, “I can run my life just fine on my own”, but this type of thinking is very unwise. While the passage doesn’t give us a magic number, the word multitude is at least more than one. So, what’s so difficult about seeking the counsel of others? Well for starters, we have to admit we need someone’s help. Then we have to come to grips with the possibility that what we think is a good idea, might turn out to be very foolish. The difficulty and beauty of seeking counsel are found in the same outcome. The beauty is that someone might have the insight that would prevent us from making a foolish mistake. The difficulty is that someone might have the insight to point out that we were about to make a foolish mistake. Brothers and sisters, if we would be wise; we must pursue and embrace humility. May we look to Jesus for the strength and example that we need.
