I. What does this passage teach us? A. Background - This was a very special occasion.
B. David was glad. Verse 12
C. David expressed his gladness. David danced with all his might. He played. He shouted. He leaped and he danced. Verses 13-15.
D. Michal despised David. Verse 16
E. God cursed Michal. Verses 20-23
II. Application A. David is an example of a man who loves God with all his heart. Deut. 6:4 “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart…” 1. We Love with our Will (Might), our mind (intelligence), and heart (emotions.) 2. Distinction between manifestations of heart, and the operations of the heart itself. One can feel deeply, yet not manifest it much in tears, dancing, etc. Weeping is a manifestation of love. Jn. 17 - “Jesus wept…” The Jews said, “How he loved him.”
3. Love is a Desire, appreciation for, rejoicing in, willingness to sacrifice for, a preference for.
4. Loving God involves enjoying God.
5. We don’t know much about loving God if we’re not loving others… and we don’t know much about loving others if we don’t love God. Love is a distant concept when we’re not loving.
B. The Content of Fervency. 1. Fervency rooted in pride. 2. Fervency over a doctrine called predestination, or the electing love of God for me. 3. Beware of the abuses of emotion a) Manipulation b)Hooked on a Feeling. Every time, we say a word, or use a certain intonation, or just allow your voice to catch in a certain way, people are trained to get that feeling.. 4. Emotion must have Content. David wasn’t concerned about what anybody thought about his rejoicing. Vs. 21 He was dancing before God. David was fervent because, “God chose me.“ He’s emotional about God… God’s favor showed to him.
C. How we Express Fervency 1. Don’t be afraid of emotions. 2. Emotions often express themselves naturally and extemporaneously. 3. Yet, public worship is corporate. We work to cultivate unity in the body by unity of emotions. Rom. 12:15 “Rejoice with them that do rejoice, and weep with them that weep.” 4. Engage in emotional activities. Dancing and Singing are emotional. 1 Cor. 14:15, Ps. 149:5
