In the previous verse, Solomon made the simple yet powerful statement that illicit pleasure leads to death. As he elaborates, the power of the previous statement becomes clear – because we are so easily deceived in the moment. Satan is a deceiver. As the father of lies, he is the master spinner of truth. In our society, illicit pleasure, that which leads to death, is spun as being not damaging as long as it remains virtual. One prominent thought creeping into Christian circles is that physical desire, whether directed to the opposite gender or the same gender, is neutral. That neutrality only crosses the border to sinfulness when the desire becomes action. This is exactly the sort of deceit that Solomon hears warns his son against. The reality is that what proceeds from our heart (desires) is the production facility of all unrighteous actions. It is the heart (desires) that God observes. It is no wonder then that Solomon exhorts, “Keep thy heart with all diligence.” Do not be deceived by the strange woman, and do not be deceived by the philosophies, even with Christian apparel, that would obscure the simplicity of the gospel message.
