CALL TO WORSHIP
(Tune – “O For a Thousand Tongues” – p. 46)

Great God! Thy glory and Thy love
Our humble songs employ,
In mercy from Thy throne above
Look down and cause our joy.

Thy presence and Thy glory, Lord
Fill all the realms of space;
O let Thy presence, by Thy Word
Divinely fill this place.

This hymn begins the solemn sound
Of holy worship here;
May ev’ry saint with joy abound
And reverential fear.

Eternal Spirit! Heav’nly Dove!
Descend and fill this place;
Reveal the Saviour’s matchless love
The wonders of His grace!

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT

We will serve THE LORD’S TABLE on SUNDAY, MARCH 22, and have a covered-dish dinner in our fellowship hall afterward. Mark your calendars now and plan to be here.

MESSAGE FROM THE PASTOR

I leave Tuesday to go to Ashland, KY, to visit my family and to preach March 11, 15, and 18 at Thirteenth Street Baptist Church. Brother Jim Byrd and his wife, Nancy, are traveling to Hawaii for a preaching conference. Then they will fly to Hiroshima, Japan, to visit their son, David and his family. Be sure to keep all of us in your prayers as we travel and preach the Gospel. Elders Mark Pannell and Jim Casey will be preaching and teaching here in my absence. Please keep them in your prayers also as they prepare to deliver God’s message to His people.

“God forbid that I should glory, save in the cross of Christ” (Galatians 6:14). The cross saves completely, or not at all. Our faith does not divide the work of salvation between itself and the cross. It is the acknowledgement that the cross alone saves, and that it saves alone. Faith adds nothing to the cross or to its healing virtue. It owns the fulness, sufficiency, and suitableness of the work done there and bids the toiling spirit cease from its labors and enter into rest. Faith does not come to Calvary to do anything. It comes to see the glorious spectacle of all things done and to accept this completion without a misgiving as to its efficacy. It listens to the “It is finished!” of the sin-bearer and says, “Amen.” Where faith begins, there labor ends — labor, I mean, for life and pardon. Faith is rest, not toil. It is the giving up of all the former weary efforts to do or feel something good in order to induce God to love and pardon, the calm reception of the truth so long rejected that God is not waiting for any such inducements, but loves and pardons of His own good will. Faith is the acknowledgement of the entire absence of all goodness in us and the recognition of the cross as the substitute for all the want on our part. -- Horatius Bonar

"Come unto Me” (Matt. 11:28). Jesus calls you to His throne of grace. He is there to hear, relieve and bless you. You are to go to Him just as you are, and receive from Him all you need. He will give you wisdom to direct your steps, peace to keep your hearts, strength to do His will, righteousness to justify your souls, and rest unspeakably sweet. He is glorified in bestowing these blessings upon you. He calls you this morning, this moment to receive all you need without money and without price. What a precious Savior is Jesus! What a kind and tender Friend! -- Copied

WHAT IS YOUR FAITH?

“That your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God.” (1 Corinthians 2:5)

So many people who claim to have faith are sadly ignorant of the truth and reality of faith as taught in God’s Word. It is therefore wise for us to examine ourselves and our faith, to ask ourselves, “What is my faith?”. For example, the Bible states, “Therefore we conclude that a man is justified by faith without the deeds of the law” (Romans3:28). What does it mean to be “justified by faith”? Does it mean that a sinner is justified before God on the basis of belief in God? Does it mean that sinners are justified before God at the time of their believing? It means neither of these. We must understand what it is toe “justified,” and what “faith” really is. To be “justified” before God means to be declared NOT GUILTY by God Himself. It means to be pronounced truly RIGHTEOUS in God’s sight as “it is God that justifieth” (Rom. 8:33). On what basis or ground does the holy and just God declare such things to be just and real in the case of sinners? The Bible is clear that God’s declaration of “justified” in the case of sinners is only on the basis of the merits of the obedience unto death of the Lord Jesus Christ. It is Christ’s righteousness imputed (charged, accounted) to God’s elect.

What is “faith” in Romans 3:28? It is not our believing, but WHAT we believe, the body of truth by which the Holy Spirit reveals the Gospel truth in power and brings us to believe in the Lord Jesus Christ (Rom. 1:16-17; 6:17-18). It is THE “faith” in which we are established and upon which we stand. If we are true believers we believe that Jesus Christ, the second Person of Trinity, came to earth, became incarnate, and, as our Substitute and Surety, to our sins upon Himself to pay our debt to God’s justice and work out a perfect righteousness whereupon God is just to justify the ungodly. Our believing does not justify us. Our believing by the power of the Holy Spirit takes us to and leaves us with Jesus Christ as the Lord our Righteousness by Whom we are have been justified before God. When the Holy Spirit brings us to believe in Christ, then that which has already been declared by God and accomplished by Christ is applied to our consciences. Then we are reconciled to God on the ground of the merits of Jesus Christ. We find that God has already been reconciled to us upon that same ground, and He brings us to glory in Jesus Christ and have no confidence in ourselves or anything we do. Is this your “faith”? -- Pastor Bill Parker
