Our passage today, points us to the blessings and favor that accompany those who are pursuing purity and godliness. The individual, who is pursuing pureness of heart, realizes that God desires us to be pure not simply in our outer man, but in our inner man as well. In Psalm 51:6, David’s great Psalm of repentance, David acknowledges this truth - Behold, thou desirest truth in the inward parts: and in the hidden part thou shalt make me to know wisdom. Pureness of heart comes, as God cleanses our affections with His Word, through His Spirit. Notice the next half of the text, it speaks of the fruit of the individual’s lips. We can’t help but think of Jesus’ words in Mathew 12:34 – Of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks. An individual with any amount of self-awareness at all, will find themselves condemned by this statement. The truth of the matter is we need Christ to wash our hearts with His Word, on a regular basis. We need Jesus to provide and sustain the desire for pureness of heart in our lives. May we look to Him, who is our righteousness, for the cleansing of our inner man.
