“Thorns and snares are in the way of the forward: he that doth keep his soul shall be far from them.” Proverbs 22:5

It is so important to read this verse with an understanding of the whole of Scripture. Otherwise, the pressure is too much and the hope of this verse is forever lost. Thorns and snares are everywhere, and by their very design, are camouflaged. The path to escape is keeping, or protecting, our souls. And it is this point that is vital to understand. We do not have the intrinsic power to protect anything. Our best efforts are often compromised by weariness, and our lackadaisical efforts result in predictable snares. Keeping the soul is not achieved by summoning internal strength or renewing resolve. Instead, Peter tells us that we are kept by the power of God! It is God’s power that protects, revealing thorns and snares. It is God’s grace that empowers the recognition and resistance of evil. Praise God for His power! But also understand our own responsibility. We are kept by His power through faith. So how can we keep our souls? Through faith. Faith looks to the power and promises of God to find strength that will never be found anywhere else. It is the promises of God to never leave or forsake, to lead in paths of righteousness, and to continue the good work in us, that renews our strength, vision, and joy to walk with Him and to run from evil. So, today, instead of deciding to just fight harder, fill your heart and mind with the promises of God and fellowship with Him.
