The Bible cuts to the heart of the issues of life with humbling simplicity as the behaviors of fallen men and women are diagnosed. While we live in a culture that seeks to understand behavior by removing personal responsibility and side-step the idea of repentance, God is very clear as he pin-points the very root of our problems. Maybe we genuinely have been misunderstood or even mistreated; but that’s not the reason we explode in anger. While there are many situations and circumstances that are heart breaking or even infuriating, the individual who chooses to habitually practice outbursts of anger and rage has given themselves over to arrogance and pride. The root of every outburst, whether it is the two year old or the 45 year old, is “I want my way, and I want it NOW!!!” In reality, the actual outburst is simply revealing what has already been brooding and building in the individual’s heart for a while. Make no mistake; this is offensive to God, because it is actually an assault on God. You see, there can only be one sovereign, and when we blow up over not getting what we want, we are indirectly saying to God, “I wish you would get out of my way so I could manage things the way they ought to be managed.” Maybe you’ve never thought of angry outburst that way, maybe you have; either way, when we get to the root of anger, we find that we are in desperate need of repentance and humility. May we look to the one who humbled himself to the point of death, the death of the cross; and follow him in dying to self; that we might live unto God.
