“The righteous man wisely considereth the house of the wicked: but God overthroweth the wicked for their wickedness.” Proverbs 21:12
The key word in this verse is “consider.” The word involves the idea of understanding, of forming a wise conclusion. In this verse, the prospect of eternity is a part of the consideration. The return of Christ to judge the world of wickedness is enough to convince the righteous man to avoid the path of wickedness even though the reward seems to be with the wicked. Is it reasonable or even realistic to think that such consideration is possible? Can one really expect a young person with their whole life in front of them to forego the immediate reward of sexual immorality or drunken fun when seemingly everyone else is participating with no apparent consequence? And the way to make this sacrificial decision is by considering eternity, which is miles and miles and years and years away, and can’t even be seen? Yes, but only by the miracle of life in Christ Jesus is such consideration possible. It led Joseph and Moses to choose righteousness instead of wickedness even though it cost them greatly. The ability to form wise conclusions is a gift of God called grace. The thing about grace is that it is needed in fresh supply every day. Maturity results when people come to the realization that grace must be sought in every moment. Otherworldly understanding isn’t automatic, and it doesn’t belong to you. It comes from God. Seek Him through His word today, and every day.
