What is the book of Proverbs? Is it only a wisdom textbook, a collection of life observations and practical insights that if one learns to master, he then masters life? In one sense, yes, Proverbs is exactly this – a guidebook for life. But if that’s all Proverbs means to you, then you have missed the message. Over and over, we find statements like this one in which there is no insight to apply, no lesson that we can tuck away for future reference. The problem with wicked actions, Solomon says, is wicked desires. It is a heart problem, not just an action problem. It is so pervasive, so deeply rooted, that not even damaging those close and dear (the neighbor) will stop your course. The information of what is right and wrong is no help because the heart desires evil. Friend, Proverbs is pointing us to the gospel of Jesus Christ. He is the heart changer. He is the One who conquers the rebellious heart and changes not what we do, but what we desire. It is only when the desires change that instruction becomes meaningful and effective in our lives. This is true today even for the believer in Jesus Christ. Without the ruling influence of Jesus Christ in your life today, your desires will produce selfish, foolish actions. This is why those who hunger and thirst after righteousness (Jesus Christ) are filled. Today, acknowledge your daily need for Christ to mold your desires to please Him.
