Sadly, the message of this passage has largely been lost on Christians today. The reason for this is that the verse paints such a vivid, ridiculous picture that when it is mentioned, it is usually in the form of a joke. But it is not a joke or a caricature. It is the wisdom of God dispensed in the clearest of terms. Contention really does divide homes. Contention really is ugly and damaging. The reason brawling and contention exist is because the contentious person is not ruled by the Spirit of God through the word of God. The contentious person is ruled by their own inclinations, opinions, and needs. Inevitably, contention, division, and destruction follow. There are many practical applications, but let’s notice two. First, in preparation for marriage, it is foolish to assume that those who are not ruled by the word will suddenly mature and be ruled by God. This may happen, but there is no real reason to make this assumption. Unless there is discernible evidence that this rule by God is already active, God in His wisdom forbids us from entering into such a marriage. Secondly, this verse provides a stark reality check. If you are regularly contentious, you make life miserable for those in your company. It would provide relief if you could be completely avoided. Other benefits you bring to the table, a nice house, material favor, or anything else, do not negate the drain you bring to your relationships. Repent today and begin to restore your relationships with kindness and longsuffering through the grace that is found in Jesus Christ.
