The idea behind this passage is that the ungodly get so carried away with wicked acts; they lead themselves to their own destruction. Some of pride’s strongest weapons are confidence and comfort. Once an individual becomes confident and comfortable in a particular area, it is very difficult to convince them to change. The wicked become so confident and comfortable in their unlawfulness, they actually believe they will never be held accountable for their actions. However, God is not mocked, and without exception, we will reap what we sow (Gal.6:7). There is a deceitfulness about sin that we can’t always detect, because our hearts become hardened (stubborn, self-confident) as we continue to give ourselves over to it. There is only one way to break free from the deceitful, destructive hands of sin, and that is through the power of Jesus Christ. It is only through faith and repentance that we find freedom from sin. May we fuel our faith and repentance by looking to the work of Christ for freedom and to His Word for deliverance from the destructive follies of sin.
